George Blackie Sticks (1843-1900) Antique Oil Glencoe Scottish Highlands

Medium : Oil on canvas Size without frame : 13.4" x 17.4" Size including frame : 19.8" x 26.3". A classic scene by G. Sticks of Glencoe, an area he painted from time to time through his career.

We often think of the effort that must have been involved in getting to such a remote area in 1868/9 to paint the places he loved. Acquired from a private collection in the North East.

Signed and dated, lower left. George Blackie Sticks was son of artist James Sticks. Sticks became one of Northumberland's most distinguished painters. Sticks quickly exhausted the supply of North East landscape subjects and began to travel further afield, to Scotland and the Lake District.

Much of his later work was based on sketches made in the Trossachs, Caithness, Skye, Arran, Loch Lomond, Loch Katrine and Glen Tilt and was exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, and other important British art establishments. Poor health in his final years curtailed his preoccupation with Scottish subjects and he was forced to rely on painting in the North East of England. Ian Emmerson Paintings was established in 1975 and was incorporated in 1997.

We have always specialized in 19. Century British and European fine art and, being based in Northumberland, in artists/paintings of the North East of England/Newcastle.
