Large Antique Portrait Painting Tudor Man By Ford Maddox Brown Pre-Raphaelite

This is a 19th Century copy by the famous pre-Raphaelite artist. Brown is known to have produced copies of Old Master paintings. In this way he was able to fine tune his skills with practice. You can tell this was painted by a master it is stunning!

He is painted on an oak panel and its hard to tell he in not an original Tudor painting. On the rear there is an invoice label with Ford Maddox Brown written on. It is also written on the rear of the panel in black.

The panel is slightly curved by the baby. The frame has some losses.

(16 April 1821 6 October 1893) was a French-born British painter of moral and historical subjects, notable for his distinctively graphic and often Hogarthian version of the Pre-Raphaelite style. Arguably, his most notable painting was Work (18521865).

Brown spent the latter years of his life painting the twelve works known as The Manchester Murals, depicting Mancunian history, for Manchester Town Hall. In 1525 Barthel Beham was banished from Nuremburg. Just a few years before Luther had publicly attacked Catholic Church doctrine ushering in years of unrest, as the emerging Protestant church struggles to establish itself against the Catholic Church in Rome. Through his support of the Protestant reform movement Beham came into conflict with Nurembergs catholic City Council. He then went to Munich.

It was there he painted the companion portraits of Han and Margaret Urmiller. The portraits are ranked amongst Behams best works.

In this work Beham has not only captured Urmillers likeness but also tries to convey his character and patrician status. For example Urmiller is dressed in a magnificent fur lined coat the forerunner of todays overcoat but only the very wealthy could of afforded such an elaborate garment. As the treasurer to the Bavarian Duke Wilhelm IV Urmiller was an important man.

Since he came from a relatively new patrician family he was also a member of what might now be called the nouveau riche. But although Urmiller seems to want to underline is high status he also appears to have been open to Innovation. His pose is reminiscent of older donor portraits and religious art.

He has shown himself with his young son very much a novelty at the time. This painting is one of the first examples of expanding the companion portrait of a married couple to include their children. So this is also one of the very first family patrician portraits we know of. In this way Hans Urmiller emulates the aristocracy who Commonly used portrait as a means to display the importance of their own family. The man calmly gazes to our right as if looking at something in the distance. Despite the lack of obvious jewellery he is dressed in expensive clothes. Most likely he has a medallion or something similar at the end of the black silk ribbon around his neck.

Thanks to the coat of arms at the top left-hand corner we know who we have in front of us. Hans Urmiller the head of a patrician family from Munich and his son. There was also a companion portrait today in New York showing his wife and daughter.

In the period up to around 1535 it was new for parents to have portraits painted with their children as the Urmillers have done.
